We requested the funds to help with the registration fees for the LPGA/USGA Girls Golf Program, and to help offset the expenses of social get-togethers throughout the year, so that our girls might stay more connected and return to programming, thereby increasing the impact of the program.
The number of girls registering for girls-only classes jumped from 15 in 2015 to 31 this year, indicating that for some girls, they do indeed prefer the less competitive and more social atmosphere of class with just girls. A third girls-only class was formed to accommodate the growth. The percentage of girls in programming has also increased, indicating a greater retention, since over all, our numbers were down about 5 percent this summer. Our percentage of female participants was at 33%; now it is at 37%. The Yakima Valley Community Foundation grant did help The First Tee reach goals regarding retaining girls in the program. We will continue to work toward getting the female participation rate to 40 percent.
