Funds from the Yakima Valley Community Foundation Responsive Grant were used administer and provide Kaleidoscope Play & Learn groups in Yakima, Toppenish, Sunnyside, and Grandview.
Incentives: Catholic Family & Child Service strives to provide healthy and educational incentives within the multiple Play & Learn groups across Yakima County. Such incentives included replenishment of consumables such as snacks, which developed great learning opportunities for children in areas such as manners, sharing, and social interactions.
With the goal of inviting more informal speakers to present at the Play & Learn groups, we were able to obtain community guest speakers to present on topics that were relevant and beneficial to the families.
The Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQ) assessments have been ongoing, conducted every 2 months. For fiscal year 2015-2016, sixteen children were assessed at total of 51 times at the four Play & Learn groups. Of those assessed, four children were referred to additional services. Since the ongoing assessments are accompanied by age-appropriate activities which parents/caregivers can do at home with their children, in addition to Play & Learn activities, most of the children were found to be on track with their development in all areas. The four children who were referred to additional services will receive the additional support they need so they, too, can soon be on track for when they start school. The parents/caregivers have become very engaged with their children’s learning and are deeply involved in continuing to gain knowledge in this area.
