People for People Meals on Wheels Program expended funds provided by the Yakima Valley Community Foundation to purchase a new large size Ford Transit Van. With the purchase of the new Transit van the Meals on Wheels program effectively reduced the number of individuals on the home delivery waiting list. It also went to funding supplied home-bound seniors in Yakima Valley. 1,470 meals so far this year, and it is anticipated that number will increase significantly by the end of this calendar year.
Program staff evaluated the program vehicle resources after the purchase of the van, and reallocated vehicles to better use the fleet to serve our community. By making minor adjustments in vehicle use, People for People increased program efficiency and adjusted the home delivery routes. Vehicles that are used for the home delivery routes are equipped with heating and cooling units to aid in the delivery of the meals at the proper temperatures. As a result, seniors can be added to our home delivery routes without the risk for food borne illnesses.
In addition to the changes on the home delivery routes, the Meals on Wheels program re-evaluated the number of individuals on the home delivery waiting list and as a result of these program efficiencies and vehicle adjustments, the waiting list was reduced significantly.
